Dawn of a new era
Happy Canada Day!
There seems to be a mini baby boom going on. It seems every other woman I know just had a baby, is pregnant or about to start trying to get pregnant. Seeing as how I haven't surrounded myself by many babies, this is new for me!
Although I really should have taken some fabulous pictures of it, I knit my sister's new baby a Big Bad Baby blanket out of Koigu. My sister reports that Hanalora, pictured below, prefers that blanket to all of her others. Even though she could be biased, I'll believe her. :) The blanket is both machine and dryer friendly, which I consider a must for most baby presents.

Closer to "home", Julia is expecting a baby in a few months. Knitting something for Julia's baby, brought be great angst. She's a talented knitting, designer and spinner, how could I not want to produce something fabulous? I felt compelled to use some handspun.

One ply Spunky Eclectic unknown colourway, one ply undyed Hello Yarn. Both fibers were BFL.
I've had objections to knitting baby garments in the past, because I worried that it was impractical to knit a sweater for a baby when it could only be worn for a few months. After a few failed attempts at some baby sweater patterns, I decided that wrap around vest would be a practical baby knit. It could fit for longer than a sweater. Now practicality doesn't HAVE to play into gift, because who's kidding I gifted a hand-wash only yarn, but my scientific mind wanted it to be practical. Julia had asserted to us previously that hand-wash only yarns we're totally acceptable, so I didn't feel like I was being impractical.

Knitting this vest marks a few milestones. Not only was it my first baby sweater knit, it was the first pattern that i made up on my own, it was the first time I had really knit with my own handspun and it brought back my knitting mojo!
On another note, I've decided to less time here (as you've probably noticed) and more time on Flickr this summer. Because I know we're moving away from California in a little over a year, I've decided to document our last year here by participating in the crafty version of 365.

Oh my- that Hanalora is beautiful! (Oh, and a thumb sucker...so cute!) Your vest turned out wonderfully - I love it. :)
I'm excited about having started the 365 thing and am hoping for the best. It will be cool to look back on, that's for sure!
knitting with your own handspun yarn must feel so good! the vest is so cute. i am looking forward to flickr-stalking your 365 self-portraits. good luck with the move! i hope you end up in the cape cod area (that's what you wanted, right?).
Cute baby! I'm not surrounded by little ones, but I do feel the tug...
I'm glad you got your knitting mojo back! It's so gratifying knitting from one's own handspun (my first was the Shetland Triangle that we photographed at your apartment) and from one's own design. It's the same thing with climbing--losing and gaining the mojo--take a break, come back and try something different. I'm looking forward to seeing more kick-ass knits from you!
Practical, schmactical! I adore the vest, and I would handwash it even if it weren't from such special handspun yarn. You didn't show the burp cloths, but those are pure brilliance - very practical and also pretty. I'm going to have to steal that idea! Thank you so much for everything - I love it all. And I cannot believe you're leaving, too. MJ had better come back.
beautiful baby! and your vest is s p e c i a l! so special and knit from your hand spun, it's such a complete accomplishment.
Love this wrap vest you made. the colors are awesome and so gender neutral! wow. and the textures are just yummy, too!
The baby vest is so bright and cheery and the baby is so squishy both are equally yummy:)Hugs Darcy
